A business owner and former volunteer coach for Centennial High School is facing charges in Howard County after police say he sexually assaulted a teen this month in his Ellicott City home.

Joshua Matthew Duerk, 54, was arrested Aug. 23 and charged with sexual abuse of a minor as well as third- and fourth-degree sex offenses. Howard County authorities say Duerk hosted teens at his home, assaulted them and later bought them gift cards.

Police said they opened an investigation into Duerk earlier in the month after they were contacted by the parents of a 16-year-old who worked for him. The teen allegedly told police Duerk had touched his genitals while the two were sharing a bed. Police also said they spoke to a 15-year-old, who described a similar incident with Duerk.

Police said Duerk declined to speak with them during the investigation and turned himself in. He was released Tuesday after a judge set his bail at $100,000. Duerk’s attorney, Justin Lake, said “My client has been fully cooperative with this investigation from the very beginning. It is important to remember that the presumption of innocence is a foundational component of our criminal justice system. We stand firm in our commitment to protecting his rights and ensuring that he receives the fair and impartial process that every person accused of a crime is entitled to.”

In Howard County, Duerk was known to hire teens at his bulk trash removal business. He volunteered between 2007 and 2010 to coach student athletes at Centennial High School and he continued to regularly attend athletic events, police said.

A spokesman for Howard County public school system did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday afternoon.

Court records show police interviewed a witness in North Carolina who previously worked for Duerk as a teen and had also spent the night at his home along with the two alleged victims. The records go on to state Duerk was tied to another sexual assault case reported in Montgomery County, but no charges appear to have been filed.
