Police in Frederick shot a man who barricaded himself inside a motel last week, the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office said.

The man was identified by the sheriff’s office as Jack Edgar Primmer, 45, of Freedom, Pennsylvania. He remains hospitalized at Shock Trauma in stable condition. Authorities said he was wanted on a felony warrant for child sexual assault and abuse charges in Pennsylvania.

Online court records show he faces charges including indecent assault of a person under the age of 13, sexual offenses and corruption of minors. Primmer does not have an attorney listed online.

Officials said Sheriff’s office deputies found a vehicle associated with the man in the parking lot of a Super 8 motel on Monocacy Boulevard in Frederick just before midnight on Aug. 1. They confirmed the wanted man was registered with the motel and made “verbal contact” through the door with him.

The subject “indicated he was not coming out of his room and that he had a gun,” the sheriff’s office said. At around 12:50 a.m. on Aug. 2, “the situation escalated to the point shots were fired,” the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office did not say how the situation escalated but confirmed he had a weapon. A sheriff’s office spokesman said additional details “have not been finalized yet” and the sheriff’s office will share more information as the investigation moves forward.

A preliminary investigation of the shooting showed that a Frederick Police Department officer and a Frederick County Sheriff’s Office deputy, each with 8 years of service, shot their guns, according to the sheriff’s office. Officials did not say how many shots were fired by each person.

The two officers were identified by the sheriff’s office as Cpl. Alex Mendez of the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office and officer Connor Walsleben of the Frederick City Police Department. Both remain on administrative leave with pay, which is standard procedure for both departments.

Maryland State Police will be handling the investigation, the sheriff’s office said.

Maryland State Police did not immediately reply to a request for comment and the Frederick Police Department deferred to the sheriff’s office for comment.

No other guests at the motel or law enforcement officials were injured during the barricade or shooting, the sheriff’s office said.

This is a developing story.
