A Baltimore man has been arrested on charges of theft and trespassing after Maryland State Police said he tried to steal a plane at Martin State Airport.
A preliminary investigation found that Joseph Goldman, 43, drove past security onto airport grounds Aug. 30. He then left his car and went into an empty aircraft. A pilot who was preparing to fly that plane found him and alerted security, according to the state police. Goldman was arrested and taken to the Golden Ring Barrack.
The Maryland Aviation Administration deferred comment about the incident to the state police and did not answer questions about how Goldman could have bypassed security. The investigation is ongoing, according to a state police spokesperson.
Goldman is being held without bond and does not have a listed attorney. His trial is scheduled for Oct. 16.
WBFF reported that the plane belongs to David Smith, the Executive Chairman of Sinclair Broadcast Group, who also owns The Baltimore Sun.
In 2017, a federal judge sentenced Goldman to a year and a day in prison for illegal possession of firearms.
Baltimore Police investigated Goldman after an allegation he committed first-degree rape, intimidation with a firearm and other charges against a minor when they found firearms at his home while serving a search warrant, according to an affidavit. Investigators found a shotgun, a rifle that was modified to be automatic with a silencer attached to it, semiautomatic pistols and ammunition, and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives later determined the firearms were unregistered.
Goldman pleaded guilty in March 2017 to aiding and abetting unlawful possession of firearms. U.S. District Judge Marvin Garbis, in March 2017, declined to release Goldman pending sentencing in the federal case, saying he was a flight risk.
