Luigi Mangione, a member of a well-known family in the Baltimore area who’s accused of shooting and killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, on Thursday waived extradition from Pennsylvania to New York to face new federal charges.
Mangione, 26, was indicted this week on 11 counts, including first-degree murder and second-degree murder as a crime of terrorism. As he was heading back to New York, new federal murder, stalking and weapons charges were announced escalating the case after his earlier indictment, according to a complaint unsealed Thursday.
Mangione appeared at the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Courthouse in Manhattan after his flight from Pennsylvania and was arraigned on four federal charges. He was detained after not seeking bail. Outside the courthouse, supporters gathered with signs that read “Luigi freed us”. The protests also echo those seen outside the Pennsylvania courthouse earlier in the day.
