The Maryland Attorney General’s Office is investigating the death of a teenager during a Baltimore police response that led to a multi-vehicle collision Saturday evening. Hours later, a man was wounded in a separate incident on Morgan State University’s campus during an unsanctioned homecoming after-party.

Northwest Baltimore police in a marked police cruiser were on patrol around Ashburton when they began following a black Honda CR-V around 6:20 p.m., according to the attorney general’s office.

Minutes later, the 17-year-old driver of the Honda drove into the intersection of Liberty Heights Avenue and Grantley Road, colliding with two other vehicles which then hit a fourth, authorities said.

The teenager was transported to an area hospital and pronounced dead. Occupants of two other vehicles were transported to area hospitals for treatment, and another crash victim refused medical treatment, authorities said.

The cruiser was not equipped with a dashcam, but the officers involved were wearing body cameras, according to the attorney general’s office.

The attorney general and the Police Department’s Special Investigations Response Team are investigating jointly. Last year, the Maryland General Assembly passed legislation requiring the attorney general’s office to investigate all deaths that occur during police responses.

Morgan State shooting is 2nd in as many years amid homecoming celebrations

In the Morgan State incident, a 20-year-old man was in stable condition Sunday after being shot at the unsanctioned homecoming after-party, authorities said.

Northeast Baltimore police said they found the man suffering from a gunshot wound around 10:05 p.m. when officers responded to a report of gunfire in the 4300 block of Hillen Road, which is flanked by the Jenkins Hall-Behavioral and Social Sciences Center and sits across the road from student dormitories and a dining hall.

The victim was transported to an area hospital, according to law enforcement. Police did not immediately clarify circumstances that led to the shooting. Morgan State spokesman Larry Jones said the victim is not a student at the college.

The shooting is the second in as many years during Morgan State’s homecoming weekend.

Last fall, Marcellus Lavay Walls, an 18-year-old Morgan State student at the time, was charged with several offenses, including attempted first-degree and second-degree murder, arising from the shooting of a fellow freshman in the chest in a campus parking lot after a homecoming football game Oct. 23, 2021.

An attorney listed for Walls in online court records could not be reached for comment Saturday morning.

Police ask those with information about the recent incident to contact detectives at 410-396-2444 or report information anonymously through Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7Lockup and online.
