A Baltimore judge on Friday scheduled a trial to begin on Sept. 19 for a 17-year-old who’s accusing of shooting and killing a student at Mergenthaler Vocational Technical High School as classes let out for Labor Day weekend.
Circuit Judge Melissa M. Phinn set the case during a brief hearing. The trial is expected to last seven days.
On Sept. 2, 2022, Jeremiah Brogden, 17, a junior running back for the Mustangs varsity football team, was shot ahead of the season opener against Edmondson-Westside High School. He was later pronounced dead at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Family members described him a devoted big brother and father, loving son and talented football player.
Baltimore City School Police quickly arrested a teen, who was a sophomore at Achievement Academy at Harbor City High School. He’s charged with first-degree murder and related offenses.
Speaking to reporters at the scene, Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison called the shooting “beyond tragic.” Mayor Brandon Scott, a 2002 graduate of Mervo, lamented the loss of life and urged the community to help young people.
Assistant State’s Attorney Megan Gallo told Phinn that she did not have a plea offer in the case. The teen’s attorney, Roland Harris, explained his client’s right to speedy trial.
The Baltimore Banner is not identifying the teen because he is a minor. He’s being held in the Youth Detention Center while he awaits trial.
