A mother who was hurt in a shooting and car crash in West Baltimore along with her two young children died Monday from her injuries, the Baltimore Police Department said.
The 23-year-old woman, who police identified as Maya Morton, was shot in the 1700 block of Pennsylvania Avenue on Saturday as she attempted to drive away from nearby gunfire. Her two young boys, a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old, were also inside the car. Both children are in critical condition, according to police.
The first shooting occurred just after 6:40 p.m., according to a police video released Tuesday. The gunfire killed Gerald Fowlkes, a 43-year-old man, and injured a 65-year-old man, police said.
Another group then “emerged from a nearby store armed with handguns and returned gunfire,” police said Tuesday, striking Morton and causing her to crash her car. She was waiting for carryout food when the shooting began, according to police.
Police initially said they believed the 1-year-old had been shot, but early Sunday said that medical personnel determined the child suffered head trauma and lacerations as a result of the car crash. Police initially reported the child’s age as 2 months old.
The 65-year-old man was recently released from the hospital, police said Tuesday.
