Trash collection in Baltimore may be canceled Wednesday due to extreme high heat, according to the city’s public works agency.

The move by the Department of Public Works comes as Baltimore’s health department declared a Code Red Extreme Heat warning Tuesday.

“To protect our sanitation workers, crews will start earlier in cooler temps. If it gets too hot, we’ll pause operations and resume when safe,” according to a social media post.

A Baltimore sanitation died earlier this month from hyperthermia on Aug. 2. The no pickup alert comes on the heels of DPW officials answering to City Council members for culture problems within the agency, as well as the poor facilities and working conditions employees face.

Homes that usually get their trash picked up on Wednesdays will instead have their trash collected on Thursday, Aug. 29, if the suspension is imposed.
