A 68-year-old man was identified as the victim found dead after a Christmas morning fire in Harford County, officials said.

Roger Butash was discovered after a house fire in the 200 block of Doncaster Road in Joppa, according to the Harford County Sheriff’s Office. State fire officials also said three cats and a hedgehog died.

Officials did not release a cause of the fire but said there was nothing that indicated foul play or suspicious circumstances.

Just before 7 a.m. Wednesday, county emergency services responded to the single-family home.

There were smoke alarms in the home that sounded, which notified the family upstairs. A family member of the victim inside the home alerted authorities to the fire, a spokesperson for the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal said.

First responders saw significant fire and smoke, according to Harford County Fire spokesperson Jeffrey Sexton.

Within a half hour, the fire was under control. Six other occupants who were unharmed and now displaced due to the fire are receiving help from the Harford County Disaster Assistance program, according to Oliver Alkire, the public information officer for the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal.

About 36 firefighters from five companies extinguished the fire. The Harford County Sheriff’s Office is handling the death investigation, as the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.

The department reminds everyone to have working smoke detectors and an escape plan in case of accidents and fires.

Alkire said investigators aren’t ruling out any electrical malfunctions, such as power strips. The final report will be released within the next week, he said.
