All boardwalk tram services have been suspended in Ocean City following a collision that killed a toddler, town officials said Wednesday afternoon.

The town is cooperating in the investigation, officials said. Police said the 2-year-old boy, whose name has not been released, was struck by a tram on the boardwalk Tuesday a little after 8 p.m.

The child was crossing the tram pad near Dorchester Street around 8:14 p.m. when he was hit by a southbound tram, according to a news release from the town. Local first responders said he died on the scene.

“There are no words to convey the profound sadness we feel for the family and their unimaginable loss. We are devastated and heartbroken,” Mayor Rick Meehan said in a statement. “Ocean City is a tight-knit community, and we grieve together in times like these. We are committed to supporting the family and ensuring that everything possible is done to prevent such tragedies in the future.”

The tram conductors remained on the scene, town officials said Tuesday night. The incident is being investigated by the Ocean City Traffic Safety Unit. Police said the child’s identity is not being released, pending contact with his next of kin.

There have been incidents with the Ocean City tram before. A Westminster couple sued Ocean City in 2019, alleging negligence, following a tram incident that left the woman with significant injuries, according to The Daily Times.

The boardwalk trams, which are pulled by Jeeps, noted 60 years of operation in June this year.

This is a developing story.
