Charm City Meadworks is closing its taproom on East Biddle Street, but customers will soon be able to enjoy their favorite honey-fermented drinks about 2 miles north.
The local craft beverage company announced on social media Monday that it will be moving its operation to Peabody Heights Brewery in Waverly as part of an ongoing partnership.
Though the taproom is shuttered effective immediately, Meadworks' production at Peabody is expected to start in March. Customers can buy the meadery’s drinks to go or on draft at the brewery then, according to its website. All distribution is to remain the same, so you will be able to purchase the company’s beverages at the same retailers, bars and liquor stores.
“A HUGE thank you to everyone who has swung in and supported us over the years,” the company said of the now-shuttered taproom. The social media post also noted that the partnership between the companies had been “in the works for some time.”

Unlike other breweries, Charm City Meadworks produces meads, an ancient alcoholic brew fermented using honey. The American Mead Makers Association estimated that between 2003 and 2020, the number of commercial meaderies grew by 650%, with more on the horizon. But meaderies are still not as ubiquitous in the United States when compared to other artisanal alcohols. While the number of meaderies can be counted in the hundreds, there are thousands of craft breweries.
The announcement of the Baltimore meadery’s taproom closure comes after rumors circulated of the mead brewer shutting down for good. The owner of its Johnston Square location, Travaju LLC of Baltimore County’s Phoenix, filed a civil action in September against Charm City Meadworks for failure to pay rent. This month, a “warrant for restitution was ordered.”
The owners of Charm City Meadworks and Peabody Heights Brewery did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
