Though I oppose in the strongest terms President Donald Trump’s pardons of any of those convicted of participating in the Jan. 6 riots, I understand why he has so acted. Because he incited those people and refused for hours to instruct them to stand down, he is at least as guilty as they are. By pardoning them, he absolves them, and thereby absolves himself.
These pardons are not his retribution, they are his absolution.
