Broadneck High’s volleyball seniors know every point and each match means a little more in the final weeks of their varsity careers. In the Bruins’ biggest match to date Thursday, their veterans succintly answered the call.
Bella Rubino, Hannah Waters, Bryce Payne and Madeline Stewart each made their presence felt by finishing points during key moments of the eighth-ranked Bruins’ four-set decision (25-20,25-21,21-25,25-15) over No. 5 Crofton on Senior Night.
“Late in the game they don’t feel nervous,” Broadneck coach Tracey Regalbuto said. “I have trust in them at the end of the set. They’ve had this exposure, so they know how to stay composed when it matters.”
The quartet composure helped secure another trip to the Anne Arundel County title game. Broadneck (11-4 overall, 10-1 Anne Arundel) will play top-ranked and two-time defending Class 4A state champ Arundel, Tuesday evening at Severna Park for the league crown.
Rubino shined early as Broadneck pushed out to a five-point lead in the first game. The outside hitter registered four kills and two aces as the Bruins took a 17-10 lead.
Crofton rallied to within four at 22-18, but Rubino and Waters had key kills to help close the set for the Bruins.
“The confidence and the trust that we have with each other helps up [in key moments],” Waters said. “We have a great bond with each other, almost like a family and makes up work hard [for each other].”
In the second set, the Bruins took the lead behind Rubino, who had 5 kills in the first 15 points of the game as Broadneck pushed to a 15-10 lead. Crofton would not go away quietly.
The Cardinals (11-3, 9-2 Anne Arundel) fought back and tied the game at 17 on a kill by senior Emily Gustie after an extended rally. After a timeout, Rubino and Stewart had the answer for Broadneck. The Bruins reeled off four straight points to gain a 22-18 advantage.
“When there is a tough point coming up and we need some motivation, I try to stay positive,” Rubino said about her approach during the game’s biggest moments. “I tell my teammates to keep a smile on your face and get the job done. I know that positivity helps.”
Rubino had two kills during that decisive run, while junior Casey Gish had two aces to help quell the Cardinals’ rally. After the teams traded points to make it 23-21, Waters finished the set with a block and a kill to give the Bruins a 25-21 win.
The entire third set was close with each team unable to put the other away. The decisive moments came late when Crofton senior setter Christine Wang had two aces in a row to give the Cardinals a 20-16 lead.
Stewart and Payne each helped the Bruins get within two points at 23-21, but the Cardinals closed with a pair of strong serves from Gustie.
“We had a couple of our players out sick, and we were kind of makeshift,” Crofton coach Greg Legrand said. “We finally got into a groove in the third game. I felt at one point we were making a good comeback. We just gave up too many points at the beginning of games. We had to fight our way back constantly. It’s hard to win that way.”
With momentum on its side, Crofton pushed to a lead in the fourth set and the game looked like it may get close.
That’s when Payne made a key play for the Bruins.
With her team trailing 6-4, the senior had a block to bring the service back to Broadneck. At the service line, Payne tallied four straight points to help the Bruins take control. Payne had an ace during that stretch as the Bruins took the lead 8-6.
With the game tied at nine, Payne sparked another rally with a kill and Waters followed with another as the Bruins took control.
The Cardinals wouldn’t get any closer as the Bruins answered every rally. Stewart finished off Crofton with three kills in the final six points to give the Bruins a decisive win.
Broadneck now set its sights on Arundel, which toppled the Bruins in straight sets during the regular season.
“It’s always exciting to play Arundel,” Rubino said. “They are a lot of fun, it’s a good matchup. I am excited to apply what we learned during the season and come back strong.”
