A Franklin High School student died after experiencing a medical emergency on the football field Wednesday morning, Baltimore County Fire Department officials said.

The cause of death was not immediately released. The student was taken to a hospital, where he later died, according to a letter sent to students and family by school officials.

When the Baltimore County Fire Department arrived, the student was already in critical condition and attempts were being made to resuscitate him, according to a spokesperson for the department.

The death came as students were on campus for practices and tryouts for nine sports. Afternoon practices were canceled Wednesday, according to a Franklin High School Athletic Boosters page on social media. Tryouts and practices resumed Thursday.

The traumatic loss team from Baltimore County Public Schools will be at the high school on Thursday to provide support to students and staff, principal Kieran O’Connell wrote in the letter.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the student’s family and loved ones,” O’Connell wrote in the letter. “We will share more information as soon as we are permitted to do so.”

The identity of the student and the reason he was on campus Wednesday were not immediately released.

Most Baltimore County Public School students will be returning to classrooms Aug. 26.
