Annapolis pulls upset in state duals quarters; Glenelg prevails

Previously injured Jack Nicka gets a pin in his first match of the season to propel the Panthers; Sotka’s major decision and a pair of pins by freshmen lead the Gladiators

Annapolis senior Nik Antonelli works to turn his opponent before recording one of six falls by the Panthers in their state duals quarterfinal victory on Tuesday.

Annapolis Junior Jack Nicka (170) trailed by five points with four bouts left when his third period pin gave the visiting fifth seeded Panthers a 39-32 revenge upset victory at fourth-seeded Old Mill in Tuesday night’s Class 4A East Regional quarterfinal.

Nicka returned for his first match of the season, having been injured in practice prior to the Panthers’ initial bout of the season.

“Jack was down 7-2 in the third period and he appeared to be exhausted, but he really gutted it out,” said coach Tom Sfakyanudis, whose Panther lost, 40-31, last month to the 18th-ranked Patriots (10-5). “Jack executed a roll from the bottom position, and wound up coming out to get the pin that gave us the momentum we needed to win.”

Annapolis (9-5) led, 36-26 with two bouts remaining when a decision by sophomore Grayden Stramanek (220) put the match away, mathematically, 39-26.

The Panthers forfeited the final bout, having received earlier victories by fall from sophomores Jaeger Franz (120) and Davis Ruhf (132), junior Ronan Keohan (145) and senior third-place state finisher Nik Antonelli (152).

Franz pinned his rival in 71 seconds, Ruhf finished his opponent in 75 seconds, and Keohan was victorious after having lost to the Patriots (10-5) earlier this season.

The Panthers also received decision wins from sophomore Teddy Sfakyanudis (126) and senior Kevin Van Besien (138) to earn a semifinal berth at top seeded, 14th-ranked Anne Arundel County rival Broadneck (14-0) on Thursday.

Annapolis went 16-2 in 2020, finishing as Class 4A state dual meet tournament runners-up to repeat champion Springbrook of Montgomery County.

Class 2A West quarterfinal: No. 4 seed Glenelg 43, No. 5 seed Oakland Mills 31:

Senior state runner-up Ethan Sotka (160) earned a 17-3 major decision and freshmen Phil Key (106) and Jonathan Sexton (113) and earned pins for the 27th-ranked Gladiators (12-3) in Tuesday’s victory over their Howard County rival the Scorpions (11-4).

Also earning falls were the Schott siblings, sophomore Ben (126) and senior Sam (152), along with senior Leo Conti (182).

Senior Travis Goodwin (285) earned a decision while freshman Travis McCoy (132) received a forfeit for the Gladiators, who will travel to top-seeded, 26th-ranked county nemesis Hammond (14-1) on Thursday. The Gladiators lost to the Bears, 39-27, last month.

Glenelg’s Ethan Sotka won a 9-3 decision over Sepanta Ahanj-Elias of Bullis for the 160-pound title at Wednesday’s 13-team Damascus Holiday Invitational Tournament.

“We’re just trying to get better,” said coach Matt Bichner. “We’re capable of doing good things, we just have to show up and do it.”

The Gladiators are defending Howard County tournament champions.

Gladiators’ coach Matt Bichner was a Class 2A-1A state champion for the Gladiators at 160 pounds in 2006, as was his younger brother, Danny, in 2008 at 135 pounds.
