The third full week of the area high school football season starts Thursday, once again, as top-ranked St. Frances continues its nationwide tour in Florida.
There’s just one Top 20 game this weekend, but that will change next week with MIAA A Conference play starting. Five contests matching 2-0 teams are on the weekend slate.
Here’s a look at some of the best games of the weekend followed by the complete schedule.

When: Thursday, 8 p.m.
The nationally-ranked Panthers return to action after an 11-day break with a nationally-televised match (ESPN2). The East Baltimore school routed DeSoto (TX), 44-7, on Sept. 3, as junior quarterback Michael Van Buren threw two touchdown passes. Venice won the Florida Class 8A state title last year and is led by Penn State commit Elliot Washington (defensive back) and four-star defensive linemen Damon Wilson.
No. 3 Mount St. Joseph (2-1) at Good Counsel (2-1)
When: Friday, 7 p.m.
The Gaels face arguably their toughest non-league challenge in Good Counsel, ranked No. 2 in the State Football Media Poll. Mount St. Joseph junior quarterback Winston Watkins, who has tossed seven touchdown scores to senior Tre Goodridge, will need his line to hold up against Good Counsel’s defensive front featuring Neeo Avery (University of Mississippi commit) and Dylan Gooden.

No. 4 Spalding (2-1) at Gonzaga-D.C. (3-0)
When: Friday, 7 p.m.
The Cavaliers conclude their non-league slate with a visit to the nation’s capital. Spalding got a late touchdown pass from Malik Washington to Max Moss to knock off Philadelphia’s Imhotep Academy for its second straight victory after an opening loss to New Jersey powerhouse Don Bosco Prep. Gonzaga, ranked No. 4 in the District region by the Washington Post, fell to Spalding, 20-13, last year.
South Carroll (2-0) at Westminster (2-0)

The winner will gain bragging rights in Carroll County’s oldest rivalry (54th meeting), as well the inside track to the Carroll County Athletic League championship. Westminster posted an impressive 44-28 victory over perennial Class 3A state power Linganore from Frederick County as junior Kyrece Walker accounted for six touchdowns. South Carroll held off Northeast as A.J. Rodrigues scored twice. The Cavaliers defeated Westminster last year, 16-7, but the Owls lead the series, 33-20.
No. 15 St. Mary’s (2-0) at No. 8 Loyola (1-1)
When: Saturday, 12 p.m.
After two dominant performances on its home field, St. Mary’s goes on the road for the first time this season in this MIAA inter-divisonal match. The Saints of the MIAA B handled St. Albans (D.C.), as Pat Cary rushed for 161 yards and senior quarterback Carson Pettibone accounted for three touchdowns. Loyola, which makes its return to MIAA A play next weekend (at No. 3 Mount St. Joseph), hopes to rebound after last weekend’s heartbreaking 22-21 double overtime loss to Georgetown Prep.
