South Carroll throttles the opposition at Iron Horse Duals

South Carroll rolled into the Iron Horse Duals a battle tested team, having won the Musselman Duals in West Virginia and the Trojan Wars in Pennsylvania. On Saturday, they let the state of Maryland know they are for real, seriously real.

Expectations were satisfied when No. 5 South Carroll and No. 4 Loyola came out ahead in their pools, setting up the highly anticipated showdown.

“We focused really on Loyola,” South Carroll coach Jay Braunstein said. “We assumed we would get there. We looked at the pools. We thought the other pool was tougher. But Loyola just blew right through that side. I didn’t expect Decatur and Spalding to be as tough as they were. I thought we would just go right through them. Spalding surprised me more than anybody.”

The Cavaliers didn’t waste any time putting Loyola on notice that they were bringing the hammer, starting out with two first period falls. No. 21 Anthony Rodrigues (152) planted Finn Smith at the 1:18 mark of the first period. His older brother, No. 1 AJ (160), made quick work of Noah Brannon with a 23 second pin.

The Dons forfeited the next two weights at 170 and 182, following that Rylan Moose (No. 2 at 170) dropped Aiden Bird in 1:19 of their 195lb meeting. South Carroll was holding a 30-0 lead after five bouts.

Loyola was not going to roll over, though. Two of their big guns were up next and they did what was needed by them, registering pins. No. 2 Chance Miller only used 36 seconds of the clock to end Logan Brightful’s day at 220. No. 3 Luke Randazzo went into the second period before flattening Decklen Logan, 2:42.

With the score at 30-12 in favor of South Carroll, Loyola needed to keep their momentum rolling but it was not to be as No. 9 Grayson Barnhill (106) and No. 4 Evan Owen (113) put pins in the scorebook. Barnhill’s pin came in 1:00 over Francis Covatta, Owen took out highly acclaimed freshman Jayden Jackson (No. 6 at 113) in the second period, 3:33.

It was 42-12 and looking mighty bleak for the Dons. With five bouts left, they could pin out and force a tie. It was an unlikely proposition, but it was in the cards. No. 9 Brandyn Fish did his part at 120 with a 38 second pin of Shawn Hobbs.

Freshman JoJo Gigliotti (126, No. 4 at 120) snuffed out Loyola’s hopes with a 13-4 major decision of Josh Hale to seal the victory for the Cavaliers. At 46-18, it was mathematically over, but there was more wrestling to come including the marquee bout of the tournament.

“We have a really good team and it’s just cool that a public school came out and beat a private school,” said Gigliotti. “That’s pretty good. We’re just trying to move up the rankings. Go to number one. We’re the best in the state. We just came to prove it.”

Loyola’s Logan Kisner (No. 6 at 132) put their last points on the board with a 16-1 technical fall of Angelo Marchany at 126. No. 1 Gage Owen’s second period pin of Nevan McNeely at 138 brought the tally to 52-23.

Braunstein said No. 3 Michael Pizzuto asked him ahead of the match to please be able to wrestle Loyola’s No. 1 Judah Aybar should the chance arise. It was in the plans all along according to Braunstein and his teammates wanted the matchup for him too.

“I kids were really driven to get to that match,” Braunstein added. “So, they could see that matchup. They were talking about it all week. They worked as hard as they did to get to that match, so that Mike could wrestle Judah.”

“I came into the season ranked third and I knew we weren’t going to get many opportunities to jump him,” remarked Pizzuto. “So, when I saw that we were going to wrestle Loyola, I knew that I wanted that match. I wrestled him a few times in youth league. I knew what he was good at, I knew he was going to try to get to that Merkle position from the side. So, I tried not to post that hand. He got deep in on a few shots. I trusted my defense. And I trusted that my game plan was going to hold up until the end.”

Pizzuto was up for the action. His superior conditioning helped him out maneuver Aybar and put on a surprisingly dominate performance walking away with an 8-3 victory.

“We’ve come into the season with our hit list,” Pizzuto added. “They (Loyola) were one of the top teams on our hit list with Mt. St. Joe. My freshman year, we lost to them, so it was a good match to get back.”

The last time there was an Iron Horse Duals was in 2020, and in that edition, Stephen Decatur throttled a young South Carroll squad in the finals. That Cavalier team is grown up now and it was their turn to do the throttling. And throttling they did during their last pool match to the tune of a 54-27 score.

No. 13 Reid Caimi got Decatur started on a positive note with an 8-1 win over Marchany at 132. South Carroll’s big guns came out strong at this point. Three of them were freshman when the last meeting happened. They are seniors and leaders of the Cavaliers now and did what leaders do, put up big wins.

Gage Owen decked No. 7 Logan Intrieri at 138 in 2:39. Pizzuto posted a first period pin of ZJ Lyons, 1:39 at 152. AJ Rodrigues put the Seahawks on notice when he used a tilt to pin state runner-up Gavin Solito (No. 3 at 152) at 160lbs. Sophomore Anthony Rodrigues added six of his own at 152 with a 4:38 fall of Evan Horwath.

With the score 24-3 in favor of South Carroll, Parker Intrieri briefly stopped the bleeding for Decatur with a 9-1 major decision of Rion Camponeschi at 170.

Manny Rodrigues used a 2:46 pin of Nate McDaniel at 182 and Moose received a forfeit at 195 to run South Carroll’s lead to 29, 36-7. From this point forward the two teams would trade wins.

Kole Kohut posted a :26 second pin of Brightful for the Seahawks at 220. The Cavaliers’ Logan ended up on top of a back-and-forth match with Eden McMullen at 285, pinning him 11 seconds into the second period, 2:11.

The little guys were up next. Two highly regarded newcomers faced off at 106. Decatur’s No. 7 Elijah Collick proved the hype surrounding him was true with a 3:50 pin of Barnhill. Evan Owen got a pin for South Carroll right before the first period ended in his 113lb match with Jake Saullo, 1:56.

At 120, Aaron August (No. 21 at 126) put the Seahawks last points up with a 1:20 pin of Hobbs. Gigliotti closed the dual at 126 with a first period pin of his own, 1:09, over Donovan Henry, making the final score 54-27.

“They got better,” Braunstein elaborated. “The first match was with Spalding, and they didn’t wrestle well. It was terrible coaching, but we just yelled at them, what was that? But they responded really well. They realized that not everybody was going to be a pushover. You’ve got to wrestle. They got better each match.

“They were so focused that there were no injuries. So, when we hit them (Loyola) we were very fresh. We were so ready for them, mentally and physically. I haven’t been around something like that in a very long time. Last time I was around a group like that was 2003-2005 with Mt. St. Joe. I hope it carries over to the rest of the year. As long as they keep doing what they’re doing they’re pretty special.”

Sparrows Point fell to Loyola, 54-25, but otherwise, had a splendid run which saw them down two defending state champions, South River and Stephen Decatur.

“We took out two defending state champions,” Sparrows Point coach Mike Whisner said. “I’m very proud of the guys. I didn’t know what to expect. We had some highs and lows over the weekend. I don’t think we wrestled very well earlier in the back gym. Then we got back out here (main gym) and we really pushed the pace and really picked it up. I’m just extremely proud of that.”

In their final pool match, the Pointers met South River, who was higher in the rankings based on a win over North Point at the Warrior Duals. North Point defeated Sparrows Point at the Scorpion Duals.

South River and Sparrows Point have had a rivalry over recent seasons which has seen them trade victories with no team really dominating their meetings.

The first match here indicated luck may not be on the Seahawks side on this day. Ben Travis was holding the lead at 138lbs when Michael Belzer surprised his foe with a pin mid-way through the second period, 3:06. No. 5 Sam Ditmars did his part for South River at 145 to even it up at 6-6 with a 28 second pin of Jackson Rasmussen.

At 152, Russell Fary (No. 15 at 145) pinned Matt McConnell with five seconds left in the first frame, 1:55. Sparrows Point coach Mike Whisner is known for his shrewd strategizing and sliding his lineup up a bit may have saved the day for his squad. After Fary’s pin, Tanner Cooper (No. 12 at 152) posted six of his own with a 2:38 second pin of Ismael Tamayo at 160.

The Point had an 18-6 lead, and next up was a swing match that each coach felt his team had a shot at winning. Alas, it was Jason Worthington (170) gaining those valuable points for Sparrows Point, pinning Zach Gliencke in 3:22. No. 1 Damon Nelson made quick work of Brent Phillips with a 15 second pin at 182.

The Point was up 30-6 when No. 12 Aidan Healey came out at 195 and threw a quick pin of his own on the scorecard, :56 over Conner Quarles.

The Pointers got two pins to run the score to 42-12. At 220, DeAndre DuVall pinned Busayo Balogun in 1:08. No. 12 Hunter Petrovia used a 3:07 fall in his heavyweight bout with Antonio Strong to claim victory.

It is unknown whether Whisner was aware that South River had some injury issues and did not have a 132lber to send out. If the Point didn’t know, they had to be worried as the Seahawks started piling up consecutive wins. Five six-point wins would tie it up, they got four, then had to forfeit.

Sparrows Point forfeited 106 to Shipley. Alex Szkotnicki (113, No. 23 at 120) posted a first period fall of Chris Pakacki at 113. Jon Titow (120) answered with his own first period pin, 1:06 over Gabe Dorsey. Unranked Ben Ford reached the third frame before ending his 126lb match with Christian Manley (No. 15 at 120), 5:06.

No. 3 Dom Ambrosino came out at 132 and received a forfeit to make the final tally, 48-36.

The Point’s third-place match with Stephen Decatur was a doozy. Decatur has ended a few of the Point’s seasons at the state duals in recent years, so this victory was extra sweet for Whisner’s squad.

They started at 152 and Cooper worked to an 11-4 decision of Haworth. At 160, Solito got the Seahawks on the score sheet with a 15 second pin of Ramire McPhail. Nelson and Worthington picked up falls over Parker Intrieri and McDaniel respectively to give the Point a 15-6 edge.

Kohut got Decatur back in the win column with a first period decking of Quarles, 1:45. No momentum was established for the Seahawks, though, as they forfeited 220 to DuVall. Petrovia followed that with a 49 second pin of McMullen to put the Point ahead, 27-12.

Juan Hinojosa’s (No. 19 at 113) forfeit at 106 coupled with Collick’s 13 second pin of Pakacki brought Decatur back within three, 27-24. Manley, fresh off an upset loss to South River’s Ford pocketed an unexpected pin of August at 120lbs. State champion Ambrosino dropped a third period flattening, 5:12, on Caimi at 132, growing the Point’s lead to 12, 36-24.

Of course, in true state champion fashion, Decatur wasn’t going to lay down. They answered with two pins of their own to tie the affair at 36 all. Henry (132) and Logan Intrieri (138) executed first frame falls in 41 second and 1:33 respectively.

This set up a winner-take-all bout with Fary and Lyons. Fary’s high ranking proved to be true as he flexed his superiority with a 3:09 pin to end Whisner’s years of frustration at the hands of Stephen Decatur.

“Stephen Decatur has had our number for several years now so to beat them was big,” Whisner added. “We kinda always go back and forth with South River. I didn’t know what to expect this year because I know that they beat North Point and North Point took it to us a little bit a couple weeks ago when we were banged up. I’m very happy with the results.”

Loyola may feel this was not a good showing for them, but they showed they have heart and battled through injuries as best they could. They did record a 46-33 win over South River during pool action. The Seahawks put a scare into them mid-way through, but their grit carried them to a comeback win.

The Dons jumped out to a 23-0 lead on pins by Hale (126), Kisner (132), and McNeely (138), plus an 18-2 technical fall from Aybar over South River’s state runner-up Ditmars.

The Seahawks went on to win all four of the swing matches that laid in front of them from 152 to 182. Tamayo (152) decked Finn Smith, then Gliencke (160) put a default win over Trevor Randolph on the scorecard. Phillips (170) pinned Brannon and JR Ritter (182) equaled the feat against Reed Verner. At 195, Healy was favored in his bout with Bird and won by a 12-6 decision.

That five-match run gave South River a 27-24 lead. Unfortunately for them, some of the Dons’ big guns were lurking. Miller (220) and Randazzo (285) pinned their foes to give Loyola a lead it would not relinquish, 35-27.

At 106, Trent Shipley was the last victor for the Seahawks, pinning Covatta. Cayden Farver (113) used a first period pin, 1:16, of Szkotnicki, and Fish rocked a 17-0 technical fall of Titow at 120 to reach the final score of 46-33.
