It was a draw in St. Cape Claire Tuesday evening as second-ranked Archbishop Spalding and No. 5 Broadneck played to a scoreless tie in a non-league girls soccer match of Anne Arundel County powerhouses.

Both coaches were pleased after playing 80 minutes of regulation.

“The effort was there,” said Spalding coach Ashly Kennedy. “It’s good to get a tie because it reevaluates where we are and what we really need to work on.”

“I love the grit. First game out against a very good opponent, I was happy how organized we were,” said Bruins coach John Camm. “I was happy when they put pressure, how Kyleigh came up big and the backs bailed us out a couple of times.”

Junior goalie Kyleigh Bland was excellent in goal for the Bruins Tuesday, finishing with seven saves. The 6-foot net-minder stood tall as Spalding pressed Broadneck in the final 15 minutes of play.

“We kept in it, everyone was talking,” said Bland, a first-year starter. “Even when it got hard, we kept pushing.”

Broadneck (0-0-1) won the Anne Arundel County league title last year before losing in the Class 4A state final.

Camm, who started three freshman Monday, said the Bruins will be more measured offensively this fall.

“Games will be less wide open than they were last year because we had so much scoring power we just let them go,” said Camm. “This year, we have to be more organized.”

Spalding (1-0-1) will again contend for the IAAM A Conference championship after losing to McDonogh in last year’s final. The Cavaliers last won the crown in 2016.

Archbishop Spalding girls soccer coach Ashly Kennedy illustrates a point of strategy to her team following Tuesday's 0-0 tie with No. 5 Broadneck.

Spalding defeated Bishop O’Connell (VA) Thursday in its season debut. The Cavaliers play Good Counsel, the Washington area’s No. 1 team, Saturday at the Mercy Tournament.

“We all want to win the championship and we’re definitely building towards that,” said Spalding senior Meghan Bernetti. “Today, we worked super hard… we definitely had chances to finish so if we can capitalize on them, we can come out and beat McDonogh.”
