3A NORTH STATE PLAYOFFS

FRANKLIN 17, NO. 13 BEL AIR 7

Using its postseason experience along with a stifling defensive effort, Franklin ended Bel Air’s perfect season to advance to another state quarterfinal.

Sophomore running back Anthony Gibson rushed for 99 yards and senior Billy Hartman threw for a score and converted a field goal for the Indians (8-3), who will play at River Hill Friday night for a spot in next weekend’s state semifinals.

Franklin, winners of three state 3A titles since 2013, wasn’t intimidated about playing on the road against an undefeated squad.

“What we’ve talked about all year is just trying to be patient and do our jobs and assignments,” said Franklin coach Anthony Burgos, whose team played MIAA A power Mount St. Joseph in non-league in addition to Baltimore County rivals Milford Mill and Dundalk, who’re both ranked in the Baltimore Banner/VSN Top 15. “Our resume on what we’ve done throughout this year and the teams that we’ve lost to and played got us prepared for these moments.”

“When we play those tough teams they’re setting us up for these upcoming games,” said Hartman. “Unfortunately, we lost to those guys but it set us up for greatness here.”

Hartman directed a 77-yard scoring drive, hitting Desean Walker for a 30-yard touchdown for a 7-0 advantage in the second quarter. Hartman added a 32-yard field goal late in the first half, extending Franklin’s lead to 10-0.

Gibson’s 13-yard touchdown run made it 17-0 late in the third. Kyran Harry had two interceptions to lead a Franklin defense that held Bel Air to less than 150 yards Friday.

Bel Air (10-1), which won the UCBAC Chesapeake championship, didn’t help its cause with several untimely penalties.

“We were making mistakes, things that we know, little mistakes that we hadn’t made all year and I think it’s a testament to Franklin for some of the things they did,” Bobcats coach Eric Siegel said.
