Unranked Marriotts Ridge has a few quality dual meet wins under their belts, including one over Boonsboro, ranked No. 19 in the Maryland State Wrestling Association Rankings, at the Best of the Nest Duals last weekend. The Mustangs added one more highlight to their season, winning the Falcon Invitational at Winters Mill over the weekend.

Marriotts Ridge bested runner-up Montgomery Blair (29th in MSWA ranking), 352-3456, with Boonsboro (326.5) placing third. The Mustangs held the lead for most of the tournament, but Blair from Montgomery County, nipped on their heels Saturday.

“We were watching that scoreboard for that last round non-stop,” said Marriotts Ridge coach Jason Conley. “It was so close. We thought we were going to close it out with (Tyler) Bury, then Bury kinda put himself in a bad position and got caught. We were expecting Bury to not only win the final, we were expecting a pin. If he pinned it was over. I had us possibly winning by two if we were lucky. And then my heavyweight (Skye Song) stuck his kid for third/fourth, and it was over. We knew we won then.”

“It really didn’t surprise me,” Conley added. “We went into this thinking we were going to win the tournament. We have a pretty good tournament team. A little bit better than a regular dual meet team. We have about six kids who can really rack up some points for us, and I think they did a pretty good job of that.”

The Mustangs placed three wrestlers in the finals, and two of them walked off the mat as champions.

Marriotts Ridge claimed its first gold out of the gate with Boden Pistorio taking the 106-pound bracket, taking down Winters Mill’s Willis Kiler at 2 minutes, 52 seconds into the second period.

“I was thinking this is any other match,” said Pistorio. “I just go out with that mentality of I should fight for my team. A start strong mentality. I didn’t want to have my mind in the wrong state. I tried leaving my mind blank, sort of, and I mainly just tried filtering all the sound out, and just focusing on the moment.”

“I feel Like I did pretty well. There’s a couple of kids that were pretty challenging. I feel like I was pretty good in neutral this weekend. I came into the tournament knowing that I wanted to work on some moves on the bottom too. Because in past weekends, I’ve failed to get off bottom. I feel like I worked to improve.”

Atley Turner, 10th in the MSWA 132-pound rankings, faced an out of state foe in Caden Rankin from Littlestown, Pa. The returning state placer edged Rankin, 4-3.

“I saw from his earlier matches that he was pretty dang tall,” Turner offered. “So, I was going to wrestle him more to the edge of the mat, just in case he got in to a scoring position, I could bounce out real quick. It was a tight match. He got three points from an armbar. I pinned my way all the way up to the finals. (It was) pretty easy competition. The only hard part was the finals. It was pretty fun.”

Bury was the runner-up at 152. Placing third were Rocky Alabadi (120), Jonah Obitz (170), and Skye Song (285). Jamie Kraft was fourth at 126. Brady Eldridge landed in sixth at 113. Alex Gladstone was seventh at 138 and Cory Globerman, eighth at 145.

“Every single kid did a fantastic job,” Conley remarked. “We pumped in a little guy (Eldridge). A little 113 pound freshman. He saw a little varsity action last week (at the Best of the Nest Duals), and actually won a match against Boonsboro.

He stepped in there. He didn’t get any wins until we needed it at the very end. He won a match to get in for fifth/sixth. He got us a couple points that helped us squeak ahead of Montgomery Blair.”

The highlight of the final round involved two top 10 grapplers at 126 with defending Class 3A/4A state champion and No. 3 Alex Bellarin from Laurel facing No. 6 Tanner Halling (Boonsboro), who was a third-place finisher at the 1A/2A state meet.

Halling ruined Bellarin’s evening with an 8-5 upset win Halling was joined in the winners circle by teammate, Nate Elliot. Elliot (No. 18 in MSWA) won the 220 match with a second period pin of Curley’s Brandon Lewis at the 3:10 mark.

Francis Scott Key was fifth with two champions. No. 18 Bodey Griffin used a pin, 27 seconds into the third, to down Meade’s Devin Brown at 160.

At 195, Gabe Bell also used a third period fall against Archbishop Curley’s Kahil Regan.

“I thought it was a good tournament with good competition,” Griffin said. “I was happy with how I did going 9-0. But I have found a few things I need to work on, but overall, I thought it was a good tournament for me.”

Eighth-place Severna Park also posted two title winners. Highly regarded freshman Michael Queen (22nd in MSWA rankings) defeated Montgomery Blair’s Jaden Chung at 120.

No. 18 Nathan Kohler pulled off the biggest upset of the final round when he put No. 9 Bury down in the opening round of the 152 final.

Meade enjoyed a Top 10 finish (9th) on the back of two champs. At 138, Cavell Morris received a forfeit as his proposed opponent, Winters Mill’s Damien Claypool, was unable to compete. No. 25 Obina Onyeson clamped down his crown at 182 with a pin in the final sequence with Matthew Pawley from Winters Mill.

Second-place Montgomery Blair saw one of their ranks reach the top of the podium as No. 5 Nelson Manzoeto got by Littlestown’s Tanner Rock, 8-3. Montgomery County claimed two more titles with Wheaton’s Eric Ton pinning Blair’s Asher Anantham at 2:41 in the 113 final. Poolesville’s Sam Stempler (No. 8 at 152) pocketed the 145 title with a 14-5 major decision of No. 19 Trevor Bowers (Boonsboro).

Laurel’s Kade Boone (17th) pulled off a mild upset of No. 15 Sean Cornell in the heavyweight bout.
