The Orioles are expected to promote infield prospect Coby Mayo, three sources with direct knowledge of the situation tell The Baltimore Banner.

Mayo, whom Baseball America considers the Orioles’ second-best prospect behind the recently recalled Jackson Holliday, is on his way to join the team in Cleveland. There’s an opening at third base after infielder Jordan Westburg fractured his right hand when an errant pitch struck him in Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The 22-year-old Mayo has been nearing a call-up for some time. He’s hitting .301 with a .961 on-base-plus-slugging percentage for Triple-A Norfolk, and primarily plays third base (where Westburg has made the majority of his appearances this year).

In early July, executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias said Mayo is “very close” and that he’s “going to help us this year.”

The Baltimore Banner thanks its sponsors. Become one.

“It’s just about the right moment and the right opportunity and the right runway for something like that to happen, and there’s moving parts, and there’s a lot going on here in July too with the deadline and everything,” Elias said. “I’ll leave it at that. But he’s somebody who is a big part of our day-to-day discussions.”

When Baltimore traded infielder Connor Norby as part of a deal to acquire left-hander Trevor Rogers from the Marlins, Elias called up Holliday to take over second base. Now it appears the Orioles are calling up Mayo to play third.

MASN first reported Mayo’s impending call-up.
