Quarterback Tyler Huntley is back in Baltimore.
The Ravens’ former backup quarterback has joined the team’s practice squad, the team announced Saturday. Huntley was released Thursday by the Browns after Dorian Thompson-Robinson won Cleveland’s third quarterback spot.
Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta indicated Thursday, after Huntley was released, that the team was comfortable having quarterbacks Lamar Jackson and Josh Johnson on the 53-man roster, along with sixth-round pick Devin Leary on the practice squad. But he said the front office would keep its options open.
“Well, we have an MVP [in Jackson], so I think we’re pretty happy there,” DeCosta said. “With Josh, we have a really experienced guy. He’s like having another coach, and he’s great with Lamar, the players love him, he’s highly respected, he’s a talented player, so we love Josh.
“And with Devin we have a young player, and he had his moments. As we’ve seen with quarterbacks, there’s a lot of things that he can improve on and get better at, and we believe he will. We like the room, but it doesn’t mean that we won’t add another guy, which we could do at some point. It’s like any position on the team; we’ll continue to evaluate and look at players that become available and make decisions based off of that.”
Huntley, a fan favorite and popular teammate in Baltimore, played 20 games from 2020 to 2023, starting nine. He went 3-6 as a starter and completed 64.6% of his passes while throwing eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. The former undrafted free agent also rushed for three touchdowns.
Huntley nearly helped lead the Ravens to an upset win over Cincinnati in a 2022 wild-card playoff game, but a crucial goal-line fumble led to a Bengals touchdown in a 24-17 loss.
The Ravens re-signed Huntley in the 2023 offseason, when he was a restricted free agent, but stuck with Johnson as their backup this offseason.
