Practice ended with a splash when quarterback Lamar Jackson grabbed a hose and happily sprayed the rookies in the face.
It was part of a wet ball fumble recovery drill that all the young players had to run through while the veterans from the position group drenched them with hoses. But the rest of practice wasn’t so fun for Jackson.
Jackson, who has been critiqued for his inability to connect with his receivers downfield, couldn’t connect on the deep deep ball. He unofficially went 16-for-32 in team drills with two interceptions. He went 7-for-11 in 7-on-7s. His biggest struggles came in 11-on-11 drills when he went 9-for-21. The bright spot for Jackson is that he did not take any sacks.
Here’s how the starting quarterback looked through each pass and drill Tuesday:
11-on-11: 1-for-2, TD
1. In his first team drill, a red zone situation, Jackson faked a handoff to running back Derrick Henry before looking to Nelson Agholor in the back of the end zone. Agholor came down with the catch over cornerback Brandon Stephens, but he was just out of bounds.
2. After faking another handoff, Jackson proceeded to go through his reads. The pocket closed in on him, so he took a few steps to the left, reset, and then found wide receiver Zay Flowers on the left side of the end zone. Flowers made the touchdown catch against cornerback Marlon Humphrey.
11-on-11: 3-for-4
3. After faking another handoff to Henry, Jackson hit tight end Mark Andrews with a pass over the middle. Andrews made the catch even though he made contact with linebacker Roquan Smith.
4. Jackson connected with Flowers for a short pass up the left sideline.
5. Again, Jackson looked to Agholor, who had Humphrey in coverage. He overthrew Agholor, who could not make the catch.
6. Jackson passed to wide receiver Tylan Wallace for a mid-range gain. Wallace made the catch over Stephens on the left sideline.
11-on-11: 1-for-4
7. Jackson tried to hit Flowers in the left side of the end zone, but the pass was too short and out of bounds. Flowers came back to the ball, but there wasn’t much he could do to make the catch.
8. Jackson connected with Andrews up the middle for a handful of yards.
9. Jackson dropped back in the pocket to begin going through his reads when the pocket collapsed on him. He escaped and sidearmed it to Flowers but missed him.
10. With the pressure coming, Jackson turned to Flowers for a quick pass in the backfield, but safety Kyle Hamilton blew the play up with a pass breakup.
7-on-7: 5-for-8
11. Jackson threw a pass to Flowers, who was covered by Smith in the middle of the field. Flowers caught it for about two yards.
12. Andrews beat Humphrey to catch a pass from Jackson on the right side of the field.
13. Jackson turned the other way, completing a short pass to Hill on the left sideline.
14. Henry took off deep, with Smith following in coverage (two players you don’t often see downfield like that). Henry had a step, but Jackson overthrew him by several feet.
15. Stephens broke up a pass to rookie wide receiver Devontez Walker along the left sideline.
16. Jackson passed to wide receiver Keith Kirkwood on the right sideline.
17. Jackson dropped a pass right in the hands of Flowers — who dropped the pass. Flowers was running down the left sideline and did not have to reach or turn back to the ball, but it slipped right through his hands.
18. Jackson found Agholor, who beat linebacker Trenton Simpson in the middle of the field, for a mid-range completion.
7-on-7: 2-for-3, TD
19. In a drill set up in the red zone, Jackson connected with Agholor, who beat Damarion Williams in the left side of the end zone for a touchdown.
20. Jackson connected with a receiver who could have been Walker, but the view of the catch was obstructed.
21. Jackson threw to wide receiver Malik Cunningham, who failed to make the catch through contact.
11-on-11: 1-for-3, INT
22. After two handoffs to Henry, Jackson connected with Andrews, who was pushed out of bounds by Jalyn Armour-Davis after the catch.
23. Jackson couldn’t connect with tight end Isaiah Likely in the end zone.
24. For his second interception in two days, safety Ar’Darius Washington slid in front of Andrews to pick off Jackson.
11-on-11: 3-for-8, INT and TD
25. In another red zone drill, Jackson started out by passing left to Hill.
26. Jackson turned left again, finding Flowers for a short pass.
27. He looked left to Flowers yet again, but Jackson was off target.
28. Jackson had another incompletion, this one to Agholor.
29. As Likely cut back toward the middle of the field, Jackson overthrew his target for an incompletion.
30. Jackson’s pass bounced off Hill’s hands into Malik Harrison’s hands for an interception.
31. Jackson turned to Likely again, trusting him to come down with a jump ball. The tight end made a leaping catch over Hamilton for a touchdown.
32. Jackson’s practice ended with yet another incompletion when he couldn’t connect with Wallace.
