Baltimore native Malik Hamm, who has been trying to make his hometown NFL team as an undrafted free agent, landed on injured reserve Tuesday with a knee injury, the Ravens announced..

Following a successful college career at Lafayette, Hamm signed with his hometown team as an undrafted free agent before the start of the 2023 season and made the 53-man roster. Two days later, he was placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury. He sat out the entire season.

Although he couldn’t represent his city on the field, the City College alumnus represented the Ravens throughout the area, showing up at numerous community events. At the Ravens’ Play Like a Raven camp during the offseason, Hamm was one of four players to show up. He said he remembers participating in events like that as a kid and the impact meeting players like Ray Lewis had on him.

When the team returned for organized team activities, the 23-year-old performed well in the face of stiff competition from players like former first-round pick Odafe Oweh and former fourth-round pick Tavius Robinson.

During training camp, Hamm had some standout reps, like when he gave 2024 second-round draft pick Roger Rosengarten trouble in 11-on-11′s, pushed newly acquired veteran Josh Jones around and bullied tight end Qadir Ismail.

“Losing Hamm was tough, man,” defensive coordinator Zach Orr said. “Our prayers are with him.”

The Ravens have numerous contenders at edge rusher. They re-signed veteran Kyle Van Noy, who finished with nine sacks in 14 games. They just picked up Oweh’s fifth-year option in the hopes of a breakout year. They signed a one-year extension with Malik Harrison, whose ability to play inside and outside linebacker gave the defense flexibility before his injury. David Ojabo, a 2022 second-round pick, is making his way back from injury. Robinson is going into his second season, which means a jump in performance is expected.

The Ravens also drafted Adisa Isaac in the third round to add to their depth. He has been absent from practice with a hamstring injury that Harbaugh said isn’t a big concern. Orr added they are hopeful to get Isaac back soon.

With Hamm out, the Ravens signed another local outside linebacker, Quincy Roche, who played at New Town High School in Owings Mills. He has two seasons and 17 games of NFL experience. The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted him in the sixth round of the 2021 draft. But he made his first NFL appearance with the New York Giants. He played 14 games for them his first season and three his second, recording 40 tackles, 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

In 2023, Roche was a member of the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad.
