Architecture aficionados and design enthusiasts should add Baltimore to their list of places to visit, according to Architectural Digest, the monthly interior design and landscape magazine.
Out of the magazine’s 23 Places to Travel in 2023, Baltimore hit the list at No. 18. The write-up highlights the “refined, eclectic, and at times delightfully kitsch” accommodations at the new Hotel Ulysses in Mount Vernon, as well as the George Peabody Library, Walters Art Museum and Baltimore Museum of Art.
Other U.S. cities selected by the magazine’s global editors include Little Rock, Arkansas, where the Museum of Fine Arts is reopening in April after the complex’s expansion, and Buffalo, New York, which the article said features “the most superlative American buildings of the early 20th century,” such as Louis Sullivan’s Guaranty building and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House.
“While some might be surprised to see Baltimore listed alongside Paris, Sydney, and Copenhagen on a list of top travel destinations for 2023, it reaffirms what AIA has always known,” wrote Lauren Hill, the executive director of the Baltimore chapter of the American Institute of Architects. “Baltimore has world class architecture.”
According to Hill, the places mentioned in the article are just a sampling of Baltimore’s treasure trove of architecture and design.
Every first weekend in October, the Baltimore Architecture Foundation hosts Doors Open Baltimore to highlight nearly 50 sites of architectural or historic importance, some of which are closed to the public during the year.
“Great art, architecture, and design are accessible to all here in Baltimore,” Hill wrote.
“The American Visionary Arts Museum is a favorite for visitors, and a walk around many neighborhoods will showcase Baltimore’s collection of traditional rowhome styles,” she added.
