The state wrestling duals tournament gets underway on Tuesday across the state and here is a preview of the opening round action.
South Carroll headlines the Class 1A division and is the local team most likely to repeat as state champs. They are the highest ranked public school team in the state (No. 3). They have a bye into Thursday’s semis at South Carroll.
In other 1A North action, Francis Scott Keys hosts Edmondson-Westside on Tuesday at FSK. FSK is sneaky. The Eagles have their share of losses but beat No. 30 Boonsboro in their final dual meet. Forest Park will host Dunbar, and ACCE has a bye to the semis.
Loch Raven is the No. 1 seed in the 1A South. They have a bye and will host the semis on Thursday. Western Tech travels to Central in Prince Georges County for Tuesday’s quarters, and Pikesville hosts McDonough of Charles County.
Harford Tech is the top dog in the 1A East. The Cobras are in the Honorable Mention section of the rankings and the No. 5 1A team. They will face the winner of Perryville and Cambridge-South Dorchester on Tuesday night at Harford Tech.
Havre de Grace hosts a quarter final with the winner of Joppatowne and Mardela. Patterson Mill will get the winner of Bohemia Manor and Kent County at their place. If all goes to script, Harford Tech will host the semis on Thursday.
There are no local teams in the 1A West field.
No. 26 Hammond hosts a 2A West quarterfinal. The Bears are No. 8 in the 2A team rankings. They get the winner of Southern-AA and Century. No. 27 Glenelg hosts Oakland Mills (HM, No. 14) on Tues.
No. 24 Northeast-AA travels to Frederick County on Tuesday to face No. 12 Middletown . No. 10 Manchester Valley is the home team for their quarter and will face the winner of Winters Mill/Walkersville. The 2A West region ties the 2A East with six state ranked teams in each region.
No. 13 Sparrows Point is the heavy favorite in the 2A North. They host Baltimore City’s Patterson on Tuesday. Lansdowne travels to Milford Mill in one of the other quarters. Owings Mills hosts Carver A&T, while Hereford plays host to New Town on Tuesday.
Three-time defending state champs No. 9 Stephen Decatur lingers in the east. They will not wrestle Tuesday and will see the winner of C. Milton Wright and Queen Annes Thursday night.
No. 20 Rising Sun sees Elkton come to their house on Tuesday. Decatur has beaten all the teams it faced in this region during the season. No local teams are competing in the 2A South.
Poly is the No. 1 seed in the 3A North. They face the winner of City College and Digital Harbor on Tuesday. Kenwood hosts another quarter and gets either Woodlawn or Mervo.
Patapsco is the No. 3 seed, so they host the winner of Edgewood and Aberdeen. No. 29 Bel Air is the No. 2 seed and gets either Towson or Franklin Tuesday night.
Defending 3A state champions, No. 19 Chesapeake-AA lost its regular season dual to top seeded, No. 11 North Point. Chesapeake will travel to North Point for Thursday’s 3A South semis as both teams received a bye into that round. Chesapeake’s semifinal opponent will be the winner of tomorrow’s Northern Calvert versus No. 23 Crofton match-up at Crofton.
Every team in the 3A East field is from the Metro Area. No. 25 Marriotts Ridge is the No. 1 seed and has a bye to the semis. They will square off with the winner of Tuesday’s quarterfinal with Centennial and Atholton. Sixth-seeded Westminster goes to Mt. Hebron on Tuesday. The winner will face Reservoir in one of Thursday’s semis at Marriotts Ridge.
The 3A and 4A West along with the 4A South have no local teams in the field. Perry Hall is the top dog in the 4A North. The Gators get Dundalk tomorrow. If they advance, they will see the winner of Montgomery Blair and Albert Einstein on Thursday in their gym.
On the bottom of that bracket, Parkville is the three seed. The Knights host James H. Blake on Tuesday. Seventh seeded Catonsville goes on the road on Tuesday to see second seed Sherwood.
No. 14 Broadneck earned its top seed in the East by getting through their Anne Arundel County schedule unscathed, including wins over Chesapeake and the 4A defending state champs, No. 17 South River. Broadneck has a bye to the semis and will host on Thursday. Their semifinal opponent will be the winner of No. 18 Old Mill and Annapolis. Old Mill hosts that as the No. 4 seed.
South River received the No. 3 seed and faces Glen Burnie at their place on Tuesday. North County goes down south to see Leonardtown on Tuesday.
